What We Need is Brave DEIB
In his 2009 speech, US Attorney General Eric Holder called America “a nation of cowards” for its reluctance to engage in honest conversations about race, a hesitation that still impacts workplace belonging today. Despite the expansion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives since the 1960s, many programs fall short, often focusing on superficial metrics rather than fostering genuine equity. The backlash against DEI, exemplified by figures like Elon Musk, reveals a deep-seated fear that true inclusivity means exclusion for others. To overcome this, DEI must evolve into DEIB—Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging—emphasizing courage, resilience, and a commitment to creating environments where everyone can thrive.
